Chapter 10

“Let me through.”

At the sound of Kolton’s voice, I shoot to my feet, eager to see his face. Relief from knowing he’s alive surges through me, almost making me high. It’s amazing how much he means to me despite the amount of time we’ve been together. I know my feelings run deep, but I’m not ready to acknowledge them, especially not when I’m worried about whether I’m going to live or die.

He rounds the corner with the other councillor, Tinoz, flanked by two guards, and my stomach plummets. Why are they together?

“There they are,” Tinoz says, gesturing to us.

Morgan offers a gesture in return.

“I needed to see for myself,” Kolton says. “Now that we have the leader’s and the general’s mates, there’s nothing they won’t agree to.”

“Are they still alive?” Lia asks, her voice shrill. The sleeping babe in her arms stirs, and Lia quiets down. “Please tell me.”

“They are,” Kolton says. “And they will be joining you shortly.”

Morgan’s string of curses floods the cell, but I’m too focused on Kolton to pay her any attention. He has yet to look at me, and I’m not sure I want him to. I don’t recognize him. His face is a hard mask, his neon eyes bluer and colder than any glacier, freezing me where I stand. My heart crumbles as I realize he’s allied to the Purists and everything between us is a lie.

Just like Kolton said, Zaden and Varek are hauled into the cell across from us. They are beaten and bruised, but from what I can tell, they will be fine. The only problem is they are wearing the same type of manacles that Kolton wore during his detox, the ones that prevented him from using his gift.

“Well, well, well. This is quite the gathering.”

Samira’s voice reaches me a second before I see her. She positions herself in front of Zaden’s cell. “The mighty house of Kaimar,” she says, clicking her tongue. “So arrogant, so naive. And yet so vulnerable without your precious gift.”

Zaden’s mouth twists, and he gives her a pointed stare. “How did you know what our plans were?”

“The wedding was nothing more than a ruse and a poorly concealed one at that,” Samira says, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “The chancellor knew you wanted to assemble the Purists with the sole purpose of destruction, but that didn’t go so well. You see, Quin is of the house of Fael like me, and it was he who divulged what you were trying to accomplish in order to prove his loyalty. Ximena is of the house of Mankoi, and her brother, Tinoz, tested her loyalty to their house as well. What better source of information is there besides the handmaiden of the queen?”

“I don’t believe it,” Morgan whispers. “Quin would never betray Zaden, and Ximena would never betray me. Ever.”

“To protect her son, she did just that,” Tinoz says, his lips splitting into an evil smirk.

“You threatened them,” Morgan whispers. “That’s the only way.” She covers her mouth with her hand, her eyes becoming glassy with tears.
